Loomis light tackle rods and Penn reels, 15 lb. test PowerPro, 30 lb. test fluorocarbon leaders, and 1/0 hooks. For my fly fishing customers, I provide 8 weight G. Loomis rods, reels, floating line with a sink tip, custom-tied I.G.F.A. compatible 12 lb. test class fluorocarbon tippet with 30 lb. test fluorocarbon shock tippet, and custom-tied flies.
Tarpon: April - June.
Tarpon season runs April - June, with the peak season typically taking place the week before the full moon during the latter part of May. This fishery entails the use of large threadfin herring as bait drifted behind the boat in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as Captiva Pass. Stout rods and reels, fighting belts, 50 lb. test PowerPro line, 80 lb. test Fluorocarbon leaders and 6/0 hooks are employed. Rates are $500 / 6 hours and $600 / 8 hours. A maximum of two rods are in the water at any one time.
Fly fishing for tarpon is available for the very experienced. This entails a 12 weight rod, large flies, and a running line. Casting is done, essentially, on a sight-basis - casting to schooling and rolling fish. I can fish a maximum one person per trip, as this means of fishing can be extremely difficult. Custom flies and leaders are provided.
CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR: hat, glasses, food and drink, and sunscreen, and $5 to park. Please, do not bring a cooler aboard - one is built into the boat. Also, no black-soled shoes that will leave a mark in the boat. It is recommended that one dress in layers in the Fall-Spring seasons as the mornings tend to be chilly. A waterproof top is suggested to avoid the spray on windy days.
